Handout MGS June 28 New Training for Elder Sexual Abuse
The Civil Money Penalty Reinvestment Program of Minnesota (CMP) was formed to support activities that benefit care facility residents, protecting or improving their quality of life, using funds collected from penalties imposed on facilities. In 2018, the Minnesota CMP committee prioritized using $385,000 to develop a comprehensive sexual abuse awareness and training program.
The result, Elder Sexual Abuse in Care Facilities, focuses on the prevention of ongoing sexual abuse of vulnerable adults in facilities and in the community. Emphasizing a trained and coordinated response to all aspects of sexual abuse, the training brings together the history and experience of care professionals, State of MN advocates, attorneys, and law enforcement professionals.
Gerontologist Dr John Brose helped develop the framework for the training and worked to provide much of the content. David Hill, Nursing Facility Rates and Policy, DHS, State of MN, managed the project, tapping a wide range of experts representing the interests of vulnerable adults living in care facilities.
Linda Walther, a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adults (SANE-A), from MNCASA (MN Coalition of Sexual Assault) is experienced in obtaining evidence from a sexual assault examination. She is a key contributor to this endeavor and is featured as a subject matter expert in the training materials.
Dr Brose and Ms. Walther will share a video trailer as part of their presentation, while reviewing and discussing the training materials that comprise this ground-breaking initiative. Access to the materials is available on the MGS online seminar website prior to webinar.
